Kurt Browning Champions Dog Adoption Program

The Pedigree Adoption DriveTM campaign aims to raise $500,000 for shelter dogs across Canada

Toronto, ON – Sadly, each year in Canada, tens of thousands of unwanted dogs end up in shelters because there aren’t enough homes. The makers of Pedigree® have launched the Pedigree Adoption DriveTM campaign to raise funds and find loving homes for shelter dogs across Canada. Joining Pedigree® in this important program is World Figure Skating Champion, and self proclaimed Dog Lover, Kurt Browning.

“I know first hand how amazing it is to have a dog in your life,” said Kurt Browning, World Figure Skating Champion and Pedigree Adoption DriveTM spokesperson. “Growing up, we always had a dog, and I strongly believe in their ability to impact a person’s life in positive ways. In fact, as a child I even had a dog that taught me how to skate! I consider myself a true dog lover, which made getting involved with the Pedigree Adoption Drive campaign such an easy decision for me.”

The goal of the year-long campaign is to raise $500,000 to go towards helping dogs – be that covering vet care, vaccinations, shelter and food for approximately 2,000 dogs across the nation.

Shelter dogs make great pets. Adopting from a regulated shelter means the dogs have already received a clean bill of health from a veterinarian. They will have all their shots up-to-date and be spayed or neutered. Staff are also on hand to help make the selection process easier and can help choose the appropriate dog to fit your lifestyle - whether it be a high-energy puppy who could use the affection of a large family or a laid-back mature dog perfect for empty nesters.

“There are too many dogs right now living in shelters waiting to be adopted,” says Kevin Lake, Marketing Director for Pedigree®. “The Pedigree Adoption DriveTM campaign is all about encouraging Canadians to consider adopting a shelter dog, even if you can’t adopt a dog right now, there are lots of other great ways people can contribute, just go to www.mypedigree.ca to find out how.”

The makers of Pedigree® have partnered with 26 shelters across Canada and will be donating a minimum of $5,000 to each shelter to be used to provide support for dogs in their care. In addition, shelters will receive a digital camera that can be used to upload pictures of available dogs on to their shelter page on www.mypedigree.ca. The makers of Pedigree® will also be providing new dog owners with a Pedigree® Adoption Starter kit which includes wet and dry food, treats, coupons and a dog owner’s handbook that outlines helpful tips and information about dog adoption.

About the Pedigree® brand
Pedigree® is the number one brand of dog food in the world offering a wide variety of products for different dog life stages.  As an innovative market leader, the makers of Pedigree® are at the forefront of dog nutrition and understand dog owner needs by providing a range of innovative products and resources. Pedigree® products are available at grocery, pet specialty and mass merchandise outlets.

BROWNING FAMILY WELCOMES A BABY BOY

Kurt Browning and his wife, Sonia Rodriguez, are thrilled to announce the birth of their son, Dillon, born Tuesday, August 14 in Toronto, weighing seven pounds. The couple’s first-born son, Gabriel, is equally excited and is already enjoying his new role as Dillon’s big brother.

“We’re very thankful for the blessing of a happy, healthy baby boy and for all of the well wishes we have received,” said Browning. “Mom and Dillon are both doing very well and we’re having a great time enjoying this special time together as a family.”

Kurt will take to the ice again in October for ‘Kurt Browning’s Gotta Skate’ show on October 10 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga before he joins the cast of Stars on Ice for his 17th tour across Canada in April, 2008.

Browning ready to take flight
GETTING PERSONAL

1. What was your first job?

My first non-skating job didn't happen until I was 20. I worked at Chi-Chi's in Edmonton as a waiter. The lunch rush, the whole thing. I lasted six months – I definitely got fired. We got Quality Service Checks. I always thought I was a good waiter because everybody had a good time, but my QSC was 75 per cent. I thought that was pretty good and they told me it was the lowest in North America.

The average was 97 per cent.

But after I won my World Championship medal I went back and they threw a big party for me.

2. If you weren't a skater or actor, what would you be doing?

When I was a kid I wanted to be an architect. I started to take drafting classes, and I did good drawings but I was so slow they told me I couldn't really ever do it for a living.

3. What's on your iPod?

As a young guy who went out to all the bars and partied hard,

I was a big fan of INXS. I still am. I'm also a Stones, Doors kind

of a guy.

4. What's the last good movie you saw?

We just took my 4-year-old to see Ratatouille and I spent half my time looking at how much he was loving it. I loved it too.

5. What TV show must you watch every week?

Now it's mainly all kids TV.

We watch a lot of Backyardigans and can sing all the songs together. For me, it's Lost.

I'm a big sci-fi fan. I like anything spacey and time travel and all that goofy stuff.

Theatre Critic

When you realize you're going to meet Kurt Browning, a whole bunch of numbers come to mind.

In the world of ice skating, he's been a four-time world champion, a four-time Canadian champion, a three-time Olympic team member and three-time World Professional Champion.

But now, at the age of 41, he's flying off in a new direction – literally – playing the title role in Peter Pan, this year's family musical from Ross Petty, now in previews at the Elgin Theatre and opening officially next Friday.

The guy who bops down the street is still boyishly jaunty, with the slightly tentative spring in his step of someone who's always going to feel more comfortable on a surface that's been well-Zambonied.

For more than 20 years, he's been out there on the ice, but now he's soaring through the air with Tinker Bell as his guide.

Back in his childhood days, the Alberta-born Browning hit the blades soon after he could walk. He had his first serious coach when he was 11, but it wasn't until he was 14 that the sport really grabbed hold of him.

"I was at a seminar at the Glencoe Club in Calgary," he recalls. "Chris Cross was singing `Sailing' in the background. I kept repeating a simple pattern – step out, present, cross over, return – and, suddenly, I went, `Wow! I feel this inside me.' That's the first time I really felt skating was more than getting from here to there."

There was no looking back. As he quickly rose to the top of the heap, everyone wondered how he did it. He laughs now when he reveals what his secret weapon was.

"When I was an amateur, it was all very straightforward. I'm going to do whatever I have to do to win, because if I don't, then somebody else will. I hated losing – no one knows what to say to you. If you win, it's so much easier.

"I was a clean, simple machine: have fun, skate hard and win."

And win he did, including an astonishing three-year stint from 1989 to 1991 when he captured both the Canadian and World Amateur Championships each year.

Then it started to go wrong. "When you start talking about all the things I've won," he says with disarming modesty, "don't ever forget that I also lost the biggest competition in the world you can lose."

Browning is referring to his 1992 ordeal at the Winter Olympics, which began with a back injury that curtailed his training process and sent him off to Albertville, France, ill-prepared.

"I was on the world stage without a shield and a sword," he remembers. "I was vulnerable. I was injured. I shouldn't have gone. It was awful."

What did he do after his defeat?

"I went skiing with some teammates. Made a few jokes. Then I left them behind and I lay down in the snow. Tips of mountains. Puffy white clouds. Albertville sky. I had a good little cry, then I partied really hard and the world was a beautiful place again."

Ask him if the experience damaged him permanently and his eyes flash with momentary anger. "Destroyed me? Never. A month and a half later, I came in second in the World Championship and my mother said, `Of all the medals in your life, that's my favourite because no one knows how hard you worked to get it.'"

Browning's mother died in 2000 and he keeps that medal next to a picture of her.

Ask him for the happiest time in his life and the answer comes without hesitation: "The day I filmed `Singin' in the Rain.'" (The wonderful tribute to Gene Kelly from his 1994 CBC-TV special You Must Remember This.)

"All the people I trusted and loved most in the world were there. It was a really tight rink that day.

"I suddenly had the realization that something special was happening to me. I was cutting edges so deep, everything was perfect. It had nothing to do with competing or medals. It just had to do with skating."

Browning admits that now, "I'm concerned with how I'm finally going to find my way off the ice and live the rest of my life," but he looks on performing in a musical like Peter Pan as the first step.

"Singing, wow!" he gasps with awe.

"It's like living in this house for years and suddenly discovering there's a rec room in the basement with a bowling alley."

Still, he admits, "I want my sons to learn how to skate because it's just too much fun not to."

And looking back on his whole program, from top to bottom, he smiles.

"Hey, I'm proud my life will never make a Monday night movie."

(12/15/05) - World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame President Hugh C. Graham, Jr. M.D. announced today the 2006 elections of Kurt Browning of Canada and Frank J. Zamboni of the United States to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Zamboni (posthumously) and Browning will be inducted during the 2006 World Championships in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in March.

Kurt Browning (Canada)

Browning's amateur career included four Canadian men's titles and four World titles. He was the first Canadian man to win three consecutive World titles (1989, 1990 and 1991). Browning earned the distinction of winning the most championship titles by a Canadian singles skater with his combined four World titles. Browning also was a three-time Olympic team member.

At the 1988 World Figure Skating Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Browning made history by being the first man to land a quadruple jump (toe loop) at a World Championship. In addition to jumping records, Browning's trademark has been his incredibly fast footwork and interpretive skating, such as his Casablanca routine at the 1993 World Championships.

After retiring from eligible skating in 1994, Browning, a native of Caroline, Alberta, won three World Professional Championships. He has continued to remain active in figure skating as a choreographer and sports commentator.

Born on June 18, 1966, Browning was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and Skate Canada Hall of Fame in 2000. His charitable work includes being the creator and sponsor of the Kurt Browning Junior Skating Awards. Browning is also the author of "Forcing the Edge" with Neil Stevens and his forthcoming book, "A is for Axel: An Ice Skating Alphabet."

What Browning has to say ...
Kurt Browning is more than just a casual observer when the Canadian Figure Skating Championships roll around. He'll soon be a Hall of Famer observer.

Kurt also won the Canadian and World Pro Titles (1995-97) three times each and in 1998 added a second US Pro and the inaugural Canadian Open Championships to his impressive resume.

KURT HAS A LIFE OFF THE ICE, TOO!

Born June 18, 1966 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada to Neva and Dewey (Arnold) Browning, Kurt was raised in nearby Caroline, Alberta...and is therefore known as "The Kid From Caroline". He has two older siblings: a brother, Wade; and a sister, Deena.
On June 30, 1996, My buddy, Kurt married Sonia Rodriguez, who is a Pricipal Dancer with The National Ballet of Canada.
Kurt Browning and his wife, Sonia Rodriguez, welcomed their new son, Gabriel Browning Rodriguez on Saturday, July 12, 2003. According to Kurt, Gabriel has "black hair and lots of it." Gabriel weighed a healthy 8.5 pounds. We are told both Sonia and baby are doing fine and Dad has remained "amazingly calm." (Congratulations Sonia & Kurt!)
They have since had another son, Dillon born in August 2007
Here's to a great family!!!

A Story Of True Friendship

HOW WE MET

To me, the most important title Kurt holds is "My Buddy." We met March 26, 1988 at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. It was outside the arena. Mom was busy trying to fit my wheelchair into the trunk of the small (understatement) Soviet-made automobile being used to being used to transport us from the hotel to the arena and back. I saw someone running out of the back of the building. It turned out to be Kurt! Because there was no such thing as accessible seating, my wheelchair was put on a platform at rinkside near where Kurt had accomplished his famous "Quad". That was a good thing. He wasn't very famous in those days --especially to an American, like me! I might not have recognized him.
He rapped on the car window, but they weren't electric... and I didn't have the strength to roll them down. So mom had to stop what she was doing to help me. I congratulated him on the Quad. Kurt simply said: "I just wanted to tell you... you are the best fan!" With that, he was gone.
Years later I found out others had told him about me. I had been attending competitions since 1981, and had been fortunate enough to be befriended by many skaters.
Our dear friend, Rosalynn Sumners has been instrumental in bringing us together. Thanks Roz! We love you!!!
Since then, Kurt & I have formed a lasting and enduring friendship, which has truly changed my life. I have been extremely blessed to experience the incredibly warm and caring personal side of this extraordinary man.

What kind of friend is Kurt?

Let's just say that Kurt has done much-- both good & bad--through the years, as does any friend...you can read about the good things on this website: For example, he gives the nicest hugs; and he can make a fairly decent hot fudge sundae!
The best ingredient : LOVE!
Kurt & I may not be as close as were once were, but I hope you'll enjoy reading about our backstage adventures!
This site is constantly under construction, so please visit again soon!

Dubreil & Lauzon Strut Their Stuff
....as the pay homage to Kurt:
For Lauzon and Dubreuil, it was Kelly's voice on the loudspeaker but it was Kurt Browning's soul in their program. The former Canadian singles star's memorable rendition of Singin' in the Rain during a TV special 10 years ago inspired the Montreal dance pair to adopt the tune to their own designs. "I think Kurt is the best skater ever," Dubreuil said. "Even if he never did one jump, he still would have been amazing."
"We told him about (the program) and he sent his video and told us to use it how we wanted."
Could Kurt have been an outstanding ice dancer?
"If he could find a girl to follow him around," Lauzon quipped.
